Tips for Successful Recovery From Crohn’s Surgery

After-Surgery Tips

Most people spend about six days in the hospital, but a full recovery takes four to six weeks. The pace, though, will depend on your pre- and post-surgery health. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s guidelines, which may include:

  • Eating a soft diet (no roughage for four to six weeks)
  • Not lifting anything heavier than 30 pounds for three months
  • Not driving while taking narcotic medications
  • Avoiding any activity that hurts

After resection, your bowels may work differently. “It depends on where the resected area was located and how much was removed,” Church said. “The bowel is good at adapting to new circumstances, but this may take awhile.”
