Seek Family Counseling
“Schizophrenia can be stressful for the entire family, so family therapy can be very helpful, especially early on,” Dr. Savageau says. “Parents [of a child with schizophrenia] may benefit from couples counseling. Living with schizophrenia can be a strain on a marriage, and a struggling marriage makes it harder to be supportive for the person with schizophrenia.” Your loved one’s doctor may be able to recommend a good local counseling program for family members of a person with schizophrenia. Think of counseling as a form of education that can help family members learn coping strategies, better ways of communicating, and problem-solving skills.
